Lausanne, Aug 22: India's javelin star Neeraj Chopra finished second at the Lausanne Diamond League after producing a season-best throw of 88.05 metres.

Chopra moved into the lead with his second attempt and looked set for a strong finish. However, Sri Lanka's Rumesh Pathirage responded with an 88.14-metre throw in the third round, beating Chopra by just nine centimetres.

Grenada's Anderson Peters finished third with a best effort of 86.69 metres.

The performance was a positive step for Chopra, who had not crossed the 86-metre mark in his earlier competitions this season. His 88.05-metre effort marked his best throw of 2026 so far.

Although Chopra missed out on the gold, the silver medal gives him valuable points in the race for qualification to the Diamond League Final.

The result also adds another chapter to the growing rivalry between Chopra and Pathirage, with the Sri Lankan athlete finishing ahead of the Indian star for the third time this season.

Chopra's return to the 88-metre range will provide confidence as he looks ahead to the remaining competitions of the season.
