India’s EV Market Hits New August Record as Retail Sales Jump 52.9%: FADA

-Mr Sai Giridhar, President, FADA

"August 2026 was the biggest-ever August for electric mobility in India — EV retails across categories reached 2,98,448 units, up 52.9% year-on-year, taking overall EV penetration to 12.3%, from 9.5% a year ago. Remarkably, every one of the four EV categories set a fresh August record — there was not one that did not.

The clear standout is Electric Commercial Vehicles, which touched an all-time monthly high of 4,702 units — the single best month in our entire series — nearly trebling year-on-year to a 5.18% share, as fleet electrification moves decisively from pilots to purchase orders. Electric Two-Wheelers, up 67% year-on-year, held above 10% penetration even in a seasonally soft, non-festive month and now account for over 60% of all EV retails; Three-Wheelers remain structurally electric at 65.3%, and Passenger EVs grew 52% to a 7.6% share.

What is most telling is the shape of the trend. Even as overall auto retail sits well below last year's festive peaks, every EV category is holding within touching distance of a record set in just the last nine months — electric mobility is not retreating from an old high, it is consolidating at a new plateau. This is no longer a subsidy story; it is running-cost economics, expanding charging infrastructure and maturing consumer confidence, supported by PM E-DRIVE and progressive state policies — now a defining thread of the India Growth Story, with Bharat firmly part of the journey."
