India Puts Climate Action at the Centre of BRICS Agenda, Pushes for Practical Global Solutions

New Delhi, Aug 17: India is placing climate action and environmental cooperation high on the agenda of its BRICS 2026 chairship, with a focus on practical solutions to challenges such as climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss and sustainable development.

At a senior officials’ meeting in New Delhi, representatives from BRICS countries discussed ways to strengthen cooperation on environmental issues that increasingly affect everyday life—from water and food security to livelihoods, public health and disaster preparedness.

India’s approach centres on four key areas: sustainable lifestyles, afforestation and forest-fire management, the circular economy, and climate adaptation and disaster resilience. The focus is on encouraging cooperation that can deliver meaningful benefits while allowing developing economies to pursue growth without placing additional pressure on natural resources.

Climate change is no longer viewed only as an environmental concern. Its effects are increasingly felt by farmers, coastal communities, workers and families through extreme weather, changing rainfall patterns, rising resource pressures and disruptions to livelihoods. This makes stronger international cooperation particularly important for countries that are working to balance development with environmental protection.

The discussions also highlighted the growing importance of the circular economy, which promotes more efficient use of resources, recycling, responsible consumption and better waste management. Such approaches can help reduce waste while creating opportunities for innovation, investment and new economic activity.

Afforestation and improved forest-fire management are equally important in strengthening environmental resilience. Protecting forests not only supports biodiversity but also helps communities that depend on natural resources and makes ecosystems better equipped to withstand climate-related pressures.

The discussions come ahead of the 12th BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi on August 18, where environmental cooperation is expected to receive further attention.

For India, the BRICS platform offers an opportunity to ensure that the concerns of developing countries receive greater attention in global climate discussions. The emphasis is increasingly moving beyond broad commitments towards cooperation, technology, innovation and solutions that can be implemented on the ground.

As climate-related challenges become more visible in communities and economies around the world, cooperation among BRICS nations could help accelerate efforts towards cleaner growth, stronger climate resilience and sustainable development.

India’s BRICS 2026 chairship is therefore seeking to make environmental cooperation not just a diplomatic priority, but a practical pathway towards a more resilient and sustainable future.
