New Delhi, Sep 5: E-way bill generation in India increased 7.7 per cent year-on-year to 139.08 million in August, marking the third-highest monthly level on record and indicating continued strength in goods movement and formal economic activity.

The August figure was 9.95 million higher than the 129.13 million e-way bills generated in the same month last year. On a month-on-month basis, however, e-way bill generation declined marginally by 0.51 per cent from 139.79 million in July.
Despite the slight monthly decline, August remained one of the strongest months for e-way bill generation. Only March, with 140.60 million, and July recorded higher monthly volumes.
An e-way bill is a digital document used under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) system for the movement of eligible goods. It records key details of a shipment and helps improve transparency and compliance in the transportation of goods.
The continued high level of e-way bill generation is significant because it provides a timely indication of business activity across the country. Higher volumes generally reflect increased movement of goods between manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers and other businesses.
The August numbers also point to continued formalisation of economic activity as more businesses and transactions are brought within the digital GST framework. Strong goods movement can also indicate steady demand across different parts of the economy.
The data comes amid resilient domestic consumption. Private final consumption expenditure grew 7.1 per cent in the first quarter of FY27, providing further support to the broader economic outlook.
While e-way bill generation is not a standalone measure of economic growth, its sustained near-record levels provide an important high-frequency signal of activity in India's supply chains and formal economy.
The latest figures therefore suggest that goods transportation, business activity and domestic demand continue to remain relatively strong, despite the marginal decline from July.
