New Delhi, Sep 9: India is set for a major railway infrastructure boost with the approval of three multi-tracking projects worth Rs 10,783 crore across West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. The projects will add around 656 km to the railway network and cover 14 districts, strengthening connectivity and creating new opportunities for trade, industry and investment.

Big Rail Investment to Strengthen Connectivity, Trade and Regional Growth

The expansion is expected to improve the movement of goods along important industrial routes, particularly commodities such as coal, cement, iron and steel. The projects are estimated to create additional freight capacity of around 27 million tonnes annually, helping businesses move raw materials and finished products more efficiently.

For industries, better rail capacity can translate into smoother logistics and improved supply chains. Faster and more reliable freight movement can help companies manage transportation costs, reduce delays and connect production centres with larger markets.

The investment is also likely to generate activity across construction, engineering, equipment manufacturing, logistics and other supporting industries during the project development phase. Once the upgraded routes become operational, improved connectivity could encourage businesses to expand into districts that gain better access to major markets.

The projects will also strengthen connectivity for nearly 4,790 villages with a combined population of about 56 lakh, creating wider opportunities for regional economic development.

The railway expansion is therefore more than a transport infrastructure project. It is expected to support freight growth, strengthen industrial supply chains and improve the overall business environment across eastern and central India.

With stronger rail capacity and better connectivity, the investment could help unlock new economic activity while making India's logistics network more efficient and competitive.
