Dec 12: Aster RV Hospital recently performed a life-saving, minimally invasive Endovascular Abdominal Aneurysm Repair on a 68-year-old man diagnosed with a critical swelling in his main abdominal artery. Thanks to the quick diagnosis and expert care of the hospital’s vascular team, the patient’s life was saved just in time.
An Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm occurs when the aorta, the main blood vessel in the abdomen, weakens and bulges. Often developing silently, a large aneurysm can rupture suddenly, causing life-threatening internal bleeding.
In this case, the patient, who had high blood pressure, had been experiencing dull, persistent abdominal and back pain for three weeks. During a routine check-up, doctors noticed a pulse-like swelling in his abdomen. Subsequent ultrasound and CT scans confirmed a 5.8 cm aneurysm a critical condition requiring immediate intervention.
Given the high risk, the vascular team at Aster RV Hospital performed the EVAR procedure. This minimally invasive surgery involves a small incision through which a stent graft is inserted to reinforce the weakened artery. Performed under local anesthesia, the procedure took only a few hours, was complication-free, and allowed the patient to be discharged within two days.
Dr. Krishna Chaitanya, Lead Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, said,
“Early diagnosis and timely intervention were crucial. EVAR enabled us to repair the aneurysm safely, with faster recovery and minimal complications. Awareness of this silent condition is vital, as it often shows no symptoms until it’s too late.”
AAA is more common in men over 65, especially those with high blood pressure, heart disease, or a history of smoking. It affects around 4–5% of older men, and rupture significantly lowers survival chances. Early detection through screenings such as abdominal ultrasound can be lifesaving.
Dr. A Arun Kumar, Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, added;
“An aneurysm is often a silent threat. Regular screenings for elderly men, similar to routine heart check-ups, can save lives.”
The patient is recovering well, following medication, lifestyle recommendations, and scheduled follow-ups. This case underscores the importance of awareness, early detection, and advanced medical care in preventing fatal outcomes, highlighting the expertise of Aster RV Hospital’s vascular team and the life-saving potential of EVAR technology.
